No 'Breaking Dawn' Record: Harry Potter Remains King of the Opening Night
by Richard Sharp
Sorry to be the one to break the bad news, Twi-Hards, but the Boy Wizard still reigns supreme. Despite a ridiculous amount of hype, and rabid fans selling out thousands of screenings weeks beforehand, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" was not able to overcome the all-time opening night box office record set by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."
"Breaking Dawn," with a $72 million opening night, actually came in third place in the opening night race behind "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which brought in $72.7 million, and was badly beaten by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which brought in a staggering $91 million.
The midnight screening take for "Breaking Dawn" was an impressive $30.3 million, but that still couldn't touch the $43.5 million brought in by the final Potter installment.
For the entire weekend, media data firm SNL Kagan expects that the movie could break Summit's projections of $125 million and earn upwards of $135 million or more. While "Breaking Dawn" is expected to do extremely well throughout its entire run, Potter's all-time box office record also seems likely to remain firmly intact.
