New 'Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Promo Hints at Surprises

We all knew that things were going to get shaken up a bit on "The Vampire Diaries" next season, and a new promo released by the CW last week gives us a few more hints about what the shake-up will look like. Relationships will be heading off in new directions, apparently, and not everyone in Mystic Falls is who they appear to be.

The 30-second teaser plays up the highly anticipated romance between Elena (Nina Dobrev ) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder), with the two characters apparently saying "I love you" to one another, but Damon obviously has much less affection for Katherine (also played by Dobrev), as he sneers her name with icy contempt.

There are also fights, car crashes and flying sparks.

The real fireworks of the promo, though, involve Stefan (Paul Wesley) and his nemesis Silas. It seems that Silas has settled into his role as Stefan's doppleganger and is confusing matters by getting affectionate with Katherine.

Damon gets the last word in the promo, commenting on the confusing look-alike situation by quipping, "If I have to hear 'doppleganger' one more time, I'm gonna have to learn how to spell it."

Season 5 of "The Vampire Diaries" begins on the CW on Oct. 3.
