The New Trailer for 'Pacific Rim' Boasts Incredible Effects... Giant Monsters
by Shannon KeirnanA new trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” has been released, and it promises big, big monsters, action, robots, and plenty of heroes.
The trailer was originally released as a teaser at WonderCon, but after word got out, Del Toro decided to release it to the public. In a note accompanying, he says, "This was originally intended for only WonderCon, but after listening to so many of you asking for more of the movie online, I think it's time for me to show you more footage. Enjoy, my friends!"
The film, which is an homage to Japanese monster flicks (and even includes a mention of “Kaiju,” the Japanese term for “strange beasts” like Godzilla), is Del Toro’s “beautiful poem to giant monsters.” The premise involves an alien attack threatening Earth; to combat them, giant robots powered by humans are developed.
“The Jaeger Program was born. Two pilots mind melding through memories with the body of a machine… We started winning… then it all changed.”
The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Burn Gorman, and Charlie Day, and was developed from an original idea by screenwriter Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”).
“Gentleman your orders are to protect the city of two million people,” instructs Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba).
The trailer features some epic action, and includes a few clips of the humans suiting up into their giant fighting robots… which looks cooler than it probably sounds.
“They came from deep beneath the Pacific,” says our narrator.
Cue plenty of battle footage, though Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) insists urgently, “If you wanna stop them, you have to understand them!”
“We are cancelling the apocalypse,” says Pentecost as he rallies troops. If that’s the best line in the whole film, audiences may still leave happy.
"Pacific Rim" arrives in theaters on July 12.
