New Spider-Man Andrew Garfield Gets Thumbs Up from Tobey Maguire

Photo:Columbia PicturesWhen Tobey Maguire handed over the tights to “Social Network” star Andrew Garfield for the upcoming installment of “Spider-Man,” reporters speculated that a little Spidey-blood might get spilt.

Apparently that’s not going to happen.

Maguire told MTV yesterday at Sundance that he was “excited” about seeing Garfield in the new role and that he thought “they did a great job with the design of the costume."

Garfield also told the BBC that Maguire, whom he claims handed over the tights willingly, had already reached out to him already to offer his congratulations.

"He sent me a lovely message through a mutual friend," said Garfield.

"He gave me his support, and it meant a great deal, of course, because part of the reason I love and have continued to love this character was because of his portrayal. To step into those shoes is no mean feat. It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I'm thankful."

Newly blonde co-star Emma Stone, who just received a Golden Globe nomination for her work in “Easy A,” will play Peter Parker love interest Gwen Stacy in the new film. In the comic books, Parker dated Gwen Stacy before meeting Mary Jane Watson.

Stone joined Maguire in praising Andrew Garfield as the next Spiderman, telling Celebuzz at the Golden Globes that “he’s one of the best, not just Spider-Men, but actors I’ve ever met . . . A lot of times you dream about things and they pale in comparison when you actually do them, but it’s better.”

The new installment of Spider-Man will pull a Star Wars-like “prequel” maneuver, telling the story of young Peter Parker, as studio execs hope to bring the franchise to an even younger audience.

Slated to be release July 3, 2012, the as yet untitled new Spider-Man film is currently in production.
