New Poster for 'Thor: The Dark World' Released

Thor: The Dark World”, sequel to “Thor” and follow-up to “The Avengers”, focuses on Thor’s battle against the powerful Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), who hopes to plunge the universe into darkness.

The majority of the actors are reprising their roles from the first film, including Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Erik Selvig, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, and fan favorite Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

Not much of the plot is currently known, nor is it known how far from the comic storyline it will diverge. In the comic series of Thor, Malekith the Accursed is the ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, and has come to our universe in search of the Casket of Ancient Winters. If he manages to open the Casket, he is able to release the cold, frigid atmosphere of Niflheim, making a new home for himself and his people. In the comics, the Casket is eventually left with Edwin Jarvis (J.A.R.V.I.S. in the movie universe), and is protected by Thor and the Avengers.

Another interesting tidbit about the comic storyline, Malekith and Loki have formed an alliance, and Loki aids Malekith in obtaining the Casket. It ultimately leads to a battle between Thor and Malekith, who manage to destroy the Casket, unleashing its frigid atmosphere upon the Earth. Whoops.

Eventually, through trickery and deceit on both Malekith and Loki’s parts, Kurse/Algrim the Strong (Played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in the film) ultimately kills Malekith by breaking his neck.

This plot might sound familiar, though. In the first “Thor” film, the Casket of Ancient Winters plays a huge role in the plot, and leads to Loki realizing that he’s one of the Frost Giants. It will be interesting, to say the least, to see how this plot line is going to be carried out. It will likely pick up after the Casket of Ancient Winters is destroyed. Or at least feature that plot point early on in the film.

You don’t have to contain your excitement for much longer, though. “Thor: The Dark World” is opening in theaters November 8th, 2013.
