New Movies September 9: 'Sully' Takes Flight

The past few weeks at the box office have seen end-of-summer battles between big-budget hopefuls and low-budget horror movies, with the low-budget horror winning out in general. As we roll into fall, though, Hollywood's new releases are starting to look a little different. This weekend, four new wide releases come to theaters, and one of them is a hands-down favorite to win the week.

The first new wide release this week is Sully, a based-on-a-true-story drama about an airline pilot who successfully landed his plane on the Hudson River after it experienced a sudden engine failure. Tom Hanks stars as the heroic pilot, and Clint Eastwood directs. Projections have this one earning about $20 million for the weekend, which should be enough to put it ahead of both the new competition and last week's winner, Don't Breathe.

The second new wide release is When the Bough Breaks, a dramatic thriller starring Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall. This one is expected to take in about $15 million, but if it gets lucky and exceeds expectations, it might give Sully a run for its money.

The third new wide release is The Disappointments Room, a thriller starring Kate Beckinsale. Expectations for this one are low, and it's unlikely to earn more than about $5 million. Also failing to generate much excitement is the week's fourth new wide release, the animated family film The Wild Life, which is not expected to live up to the standards set by the summer's animated blockbusters. Look for this one to earn $10 million or less for the weekend.
