New Movies September 30: 'Miss Peregrine' and 'Deepwater Horizon'

This weekend delivers three new wide-release movies and probably also a close competition for the top spot at the box office. Last week's winner, The Magnificent Seven, will have to continue to draw big audiences to stay ahead of the week's two biggest newcomers.

The first of this week's new wide releases is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The adaptation of the popular kids' books was directed by Tim Burton and stars Eva Green and Asa Butterfield. Burton hasn't had much box-office success this decade, and Miss Peregrine is getting tepid reviews from critics. Yet tracking suggests that the film could earn in excess of $25 million over the weekend, putting it in the frontrunner's position.

The week's second big new release is Deepwater Horizon, a dramatization of the BP oil-spill disaster of 2010. This one stars Mark Wahlberg and promises lots of heroics and explosions. It's expected to take in around $20 million, but strong word of mouth could put it close on the heels of Miss Peregrine.

The week's final new wide release is Masterminds, a comedy starring Kristin Wiig and Jason Sudeikis. Despite the stature of its stars, this one almost certainly won't be a contender. Expect it to take in $10 million or less.< /p>
