New Movies September 23: 'Magnificent Seven' and 'Storks'
by EG
Last weekend's new movies didn't fare very well in terms of ticket sales, but this week's two new wide releases should do much better. That means last week's top movie, Sully, which held the number-one spot for the second weekend in a row, is very unlikely to threepeat this week.
None of last week's three new wide releases managed to earn $10 million over the weekend, but their weak earnings were still enough to win them second through fourth places in the box-office race. That won't happen again this week, as the two newcomers are expected to be among the hottest new releases of the fall movie season so far.
The first new wide release is The Magnificent Seven, a Western reboot starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt. Even though Westerns are far from a sure bet these days, the sheer star power of this one should lead it to an easy box-office victory. Expect The Magnificent Seven to take in about $35 million for the weekend.
Not far behind should be Storks, a new animated family film. This one doesn't have the stature of a Finding Dory or Zootopia, but given that its only real competition for the family audience is the underperforming The Wild Life, Storks should be able to bring in close to $30 million.
Look for Sully to slip into third place. The rest of the top five will likely be up for grabs among last week's holdovers, with the poorly received Blair Witch likely to see the biggest drop from last week.
