New Movies September 2: 'Morgan' Challenges 'Don't Breathe'

Last weekend at the box office, the horror film Don't Breathe took the top spot away from the reigning champ, Suicide Squad. This weekend, Don't Breathe will face its own challenger, a sci-fi thriller that may or may not have the power to claim the number-one position.

This Labor Day weekend is the official end of the summer movie season and the beginning of the fall season, a period during which Hollywood regroups and prepares to launch the next round of blockbusters closer to the holidays. The autumnal lull kicks off this week with just two new wide releases, neither of which is expected to do big business.

The first of the week's new releases is Morgan, a sci-fi/horror film starring Kate Mara and Anya Taylor-Joy. Mara plays an investigator sent to check out a bioengineering lab where an innocent-looking experiment (Taylor-Joy) is bent on visiting death and destruction upon her handlers. The film is getting predominantly negative reviews from critics, and most projections have it earning between $7 and $10 million over the weekend.

The week's other new wide release is The Light Between Oceans, a dramatic romance set in 1920s Australia. It stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. This one will likely draw an older audience, if any, and it, too, should bring in about $7 million for the weekend.

Even if Don't Breathe suffers a significant drop from last week's performance, it should still have enough steam to stay ahead of Morgan, unless that film substantially exceeds expectations.
