New Movies September 18: Maze Running and Gangsters

The week's new movies are aiming for very different audience demographics, and more than likely, the movie that the young people go to see is going to be the one that wins the box office competition.

The first of the big wide releases is a sequel of the first installment of a young adult franchise. The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials picks up where The Maze Runner left off, with a group of rebellious free from the maze in which they'd been imprisoned and facing even bigger challenges. This dystopian franchise has so far not caught on Hunger-Games-style, but with that franchise about to wrap up, The Maze Runner and the Divergent series are left to carry the YA banner.

The second big release, Black Mass, features Johnny Depp wearing make-up that makes him virtually unrecognizable. He plays infamous ganster Whitey Bulger, and Benedict Cumberbatch plays his brother. Depp has not been a reliable box-office draw lately, especiallly when he's not in the guise of a hunky pirate, and he's definitely not that in this movie.

In limited release this week, only on IMAX screens, is Everest, an adventure thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
