New Movies October 21: A Scary Busy Week at the Box Office
by EG
If nothing else, moviegoers won't be able to complain that there's nothing new to see in theaters this weekend. Four new wide-release films will debut this week, filling up cineplexes and giving movie lovers plenty to choose from, as if there wasn't enough variety in theaters already.
The first of the week's new releases, and the film most likely to take the top spot away from last week's number-one movie, The Accountant, is Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. This sequel to 2012's Jack Reacher stars, once again, Tom Cruise as a renegade homicide investigator. This one will probably earn in the vicinity of $20 million for the weekend, a mark that seems to be the sweet spot for the weekly top spot this fall.
Also new this week is Boo! A Madea Halloween, the latest cross-dressing comedy from Tyler Perry, and Ouija: Origian of Evil, a prequel to 2014's Ouija. These two occupy opposite ends of the comedy/horror spectrum, and between them, they should have the Halloween-movie market covered. Finally, there's Keeping Up with the Joneses, a spy comedy starring Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot.
These latter three new movies are all likely to rake in somewhere in the range just beneath $10 million to something near $15 million, so expect them to slug it out for positions in the top five. With the exception of Ouija: Origin of Evil, none of the new releases is getting positive reviews from critics, so it's not easy to sort out which of them, if any, will have a particularly strong opening weekend.
