New Movies October 14: Kevin Hart and 'The Accountant'
by EG
This weekend probably won't be as wet and windy as it was on the East Coast last weekend, but it still could end up being pretty dreary at the box office. Three new wide releases debut in theaters this week, and just like in the past few weeks, none of the new movies is expected to be a huge hit.
The first of the week's new wide releases is The Accountant, a thriller starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal and J.K. Simmons. Despite its obvious big-name cast, this one is getting largely negative reviews and not much social media buzz. Still, it's expected to take the top spot at the weekend box office with ticket sales in the vicinity of $15 million.
The next big new release is the comedy concert film Kevin Hart: What Now? Hart's last concert film, 2013's Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, debuted with a strong $10-million weekend, and he's an even bigger star now. Some predictions have this new film earning north of $13 million this weekend, although those projections might prove to be a bit optimistic.
The week's final new wide release is Max Steel, a sci-fi action flick based on a toy line and an animated series. This one may draw a few youngsters but isn't likely to interest a wide audience. Look for it to pull in about $5 million or less.
Last week's number-one movie, The Girl on the Train, is also likely to be in the hunt for a top-five position, and it's possible holdovers Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Deepwater Horizon could remain in the mix, too.
