New Movies November 23: 'Moana' Set to Come Out on Top

The holiday weekend gets a very early start this week, at least in terms of new movies in theaters. The top movie for the long weekend is likely to be a new animated film from Disney, and second place will go to last week's short-lived number one movie.

Disney's Moana, which introduces a new Disney princess in the form of the Polynesian title character, is expected to take in about $75 million between Wednesday and Sunday. That should be enough to take the top box-office spot with ease, and there's always a chance that it could be an even bigger hit.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Harry Potter prequel that's supposed to launch a new megafranchise, has barely had a chance to savor the number-one position. It earned $75 million last weekend, but it's going to take a back seat to Moana through the Thanksgiving weekend. That could be bad news for a film that's intended to be the first of five movies in a lengthy franchise.

Other new movies this week include Allied, a World-War-II thriller starring Brad Pitt, and Bad Santa 2, a raunchy comedy starring Billy Bob Thornton. Allied could hit the $20-million mark and take third place. Bad Santa is likely to earn somewhere around $15 million and contend for fourth place.
