New Movies November 13: Inspiration, Hope and Holiday Hijinks
by EG
Last weekend at the box office was a welcome change from the dreary weekends of October, when just about every new movie failed to find an appreciative audience. Three new wide releases hit theaters this weekend, and unless something surprising happens, they're probably going to make the middle of November look a lot like October.
The first new wide release, Love the Coopers, is a standard holiday comedy in which a wacky family gathers for Christmas. It features a cast of well-known names, including John Goodman, Diane Keaton, Marisa Tomei, Amanda Seyfried and Olivia Wilde. It sounds pleasant enough, but it's unlikely to earn more than $10 million for the weekend.
Next up is The 33, a true-story drama about 33 miners who are trapped deep underground in a mine in Chile. The film offers suspense, drama and an inspirational tale about the strength of the human spirit, but it also stars Antonia Banderas. Observers predict that the film doesn't have much chance of cracking the top five for the weekend.
The final new wide release is My All-American, another inspirational story about a football player who's diagnosed with cancer. It was written by the same guy who wrote Rudy, and it stars Finn Wittrock, surely the actor with the best football-player name in Hollywood. It also has strong faith-based themes, which sometimes draw a sizable crowd. My All-American could make it into the top ten, and it may be the minor surprise of the weekend.
The weekend's top spots are almost certain to go to last week's winners, Spectre and The Peanuts Movie.
