New Movies Nov. 15-17: 'Best Man Holiday' Takes on 'Thor'

Last week Thor owned the box office, and next week Katniss Everdeen will conquer all challengers, but the week in between is a treacherous no-movie's-land that's almost completely free of new releases.

The only new movie going into wide release this weekend is "The Best Man Holiday," a comedy-drama featuring an ensemble cast that includes Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard and Nia Long. It's a long-delayed sequel to 1999's "The Best Man," and although they've complained a bit about the movie's melodrama and predictability, critics have been largely positive in their reaction to the film. Back in 1999, "The Best Man" took in $9 million in its opening weekend, so there's a chance that the sequel could be a minor sleeper hit.

Otherwise, the only options are left-overs. "Thor: The Dark World" will no doubt remain strong, and both "Bad Grandpa" and "Last Vegas" are holding on to some of their momentum.

For the most part, though, this weekend will provide time for moviegoers to catch their breath after two straight weeks of big action-movie debuts ("Ender's Game" opened the week before "Thor") in anticipation of next week's premiere of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," which could achieve an opening-weekend gross of $150 million.
