New Movies May 9-11: 'Neighbors,' 'Legends of Oz' and 'Moms' Night Out'

There’s no shortage of big-budget action movies throughout the month of May, but for just this one weekend, theaters are going to be free of spectacular special effects, costumed superheroes and gigantic explosions—at least as far as new movies go. “Spider-Man” swung into theaters last week, and next week “Godzilla” stomps into town, but this week, it’s all laughs and animated characters.

The front-runner among new releases is “Neighbors,” a raunchy comedy starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a comedy aimed specifically at guys, and audiences could be hungry for Rogen’s slob-centric appeal.

“Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return” is an animated flick that’s hoping that every family in America has already seen “Frozen” and is ready for an alternative to “Rio 2.” This one is not a glitzy release, though; its only real selling point is the voice of Lea Michele in the title role.

The reception of “Moms’ Night Out” will be interesting to watch. It’s a Christian-oriented gals’ comedy starring Patricia Heaton. Christian films have been doing well at the box office lately, but none of them so far has been a comedy, and none of them has faced competition from a one-to-one mainstream equivalent—which “Mom’s Night” will face in the decidedly not-family-friendly “The Other Woman.”
