New Movies May 20: Angry Birds and More Neighbors

For the past two weekends, Hollywood studios have given a wide berth to Captain America: Civil, reserving their big new releases for a time when the Marvel juggernaut is, they hope, past its prime. That time has come, and this weekend, the summer movie season begins to heat up for real.

The first of the week's three new wide releases is The Angry Birds Movie, an animated adaptation of the popular video game. If anything could make audiences forget about Captain America, it's a new animated blockbuster, and Sony hopes this one fills the bill. Angry Birds mania first exploded almost seven years ago and since cooled considerably, but even though the title is a bit dated, the movie could still best Captain America if it's lucky.

Another strong contender this weekend will be Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. This sequel to the 2014 hit comedy will feature original stars Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, as well as Chloë Grace Moretz as the leader of a sorority that's causing trouble in the neighborhood. Like Captain America and Angry Birds, this one is expected to earn about $30 million for the weekend, making it a tight three-way race for the top spot.

The week's third new wide release is probably going to have to settle for fourth place, at best, The Nice Guys is a comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. Despite its star power, this one will probably only take in about $10 million for the weekend.
