New Movies May 16-18: 'Godzilla' Takes on Seth Rogen and Spider-Man

The summer movie season officially started two weeks ago, but things really start to heat up this weekend, when a couple of big new movies join a crop of solid holdovers to give moviegoers a long list of popular choices at the box office.

The biggest new wide release this week is “Godzilla,” a reboot of the 1954 classic about a giant dinosaur-like monster that loves to stomp on cities. In the original, Godzilla’s playground was Tokyo, but in this American remake, he’s set to devastate North American cities, too. Hopes are high that this version, starring Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), will be much better than the awful 1998 version starring Matthew Broderick.

The other new wide release is Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm,” a feel-good flick starring Jon Hamm as a sports agent who tries to revive his career by recruiting two young baseball prodigies from India. The movie is getting mixed reviews, and it faces very tough competition, so its prospects are not great.

The week’s crop of holdovers is strong, too. Comedy fans have last week’s winner, “Neighbors,” and the first-place movie from three weeks ago, “The Other Woman,” to choose from. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is still around for those who need their weekly dose of superheroes. The only real losers are families with young children, who rejected “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return” last week and who don’t have any new options this week.
