New Movies March 25: Justice Dawns and a Wedding
by EG
The young year has already seen some big hit movies, but this weekend's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice could be the biggest so far. The DC-Comics superhero movie has the potential to deliver the biggest opening weekend of the year to date, but in order to reach that milestone, Dawn of Justice will have to outperform some very successful films.
Dawn of Justice is Warner Bros.' answer to The Avengers, a superhero movie with not just one, but a whole crowd of superheroes to awe and amaze audiences. Dawn of Justice features the title match-up between Henry Cavill's Superman and Ben Affleck's Batman, but it also includes appearances by Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Lex Luthor.
Batman v Superman is predicted to take in as much as $150 million over its opening weekend. That would be twice the opening-weekend take of Zootopia, the year's latest blockbuster hit. It would also edge out the opening weekend turned in by Deadpool; that surprise hit earned $132 million in its debut. Robust advance ticket sales suggest that Dawn of Justice will have no problem living up to expectations.
The superhero movie is not the only new release this weekend, however. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is a sequel to the sleeper hit comedy that earned $241 million back in 2002. Stars Nia Vardalos and John Corbett return for the sequel, and the film will aim for audiences that are not interested in superhero slugfests.
