New Movies March 10: 'Kong' Takes on 'Logan'

Last weekend, Logan devastated all the other contenders at the box office, surprising experts and raking in an unexpected amount of cash. This week, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine faces a gigantic challenger, as Kong: Skull Island comes to theaters.

Kong is the only new wide release this week. Everyone else is staying out of the way of both Logan and Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which hits theaters next week. That gives Kong this weekend all to itself, at least in terms of new movies. The question will be whether or not Logan will run out of steam after its big weekend last week, thereby making room for Kong to rule this weekend.

Kong has a lot going for it. It stars Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers), Brie Larson (Room), John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane) and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers). It's also enjoying a pretty decent rating on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its release, and its PG-13 rating makes it accessible to a wider audience than the R-rated Logan.

Most predictions have Kong earning in the vicinity of $40 million for the weekend. If Logan, which earned $85 million last weekend, sees its business drop off by about half this week, it too would ring up around $40 million in ticket sales. That means you can expect a close race for the top spot, with Kong possibly having a slight edge.
