New Movies Mar. 28-30: Can 'Divergent' Hold Back 'Noah'?
by EGThe box-office battle this weekend probably won't be of Biblical proportions, but chances are that Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic, "Noah," is going to win. The movie features fire raining from the sky, armies of bad guys, apocalyptic catastrophe and lots and lots of CGI animals—a recipe for success if there ever was one.
"Noah" is one of two big wide releases this week, and it boasts big-name stars Russell Crowe and Emma Watson. There had been some question of whether or not Aronofsky's unconventional telling of the story would repel religious audiences, but the film's international opening suggests that it will do just fine with Christian moviegoers—and it's got plenty of spectacular action to draw in the rest.
That could spell trouble for "Divergent," last week's top film. The young-adult film opened fairly strongly, but it's probably going to fall off sharply in the face of competition from "Noah."
The week's other wide release is likely to get lost in the dust generated by the battle for the top spot. "Sabotage" is an ultra-violent action pic about drug dealers and DEA agents which, unfortunately, stars Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold hasn't had a hit movie in a long time, and all indications are that he's not going to have one this weekend, either.
Filling out theaters this weekend are "Bad Words" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel," both of which widen to about 900 theaters, and "Cesar Chavez," which opens on 664 screens.
