New Movies June 3: Turtles, Pop Stars and Emilia Clarke
by EG
The top spot at the box office has had a revolving door the past few weeks, with Captain America: Civil War holding the position three weeks ago, The Angry Birds Movie taking over two weeks ago, and X-Men: Apocalypse rising to the top last weekend. Now that the summer movies are steadily rolling out, we could see yet another change atop the charts this weekend.
The new number one this week could be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, the sequel to 2014's hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Even if the sequel doesn't match its predecessor's performance, it could still beat the X-Men if it takes in $50 to $60 million over the weekend as expected. The movie is getting awful reviews, but that didn't stop its predecessor and probably won't harm this one, either.
Among the week's other new movies is Me Before You, a romantic drama starring Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones fame. The film is getting only mediocre reviews, and it certainly doesn't play to Clarke's GoT fan base. Expect it to earn $10 to $15 million for the weekend.
The week's third and final new release is Popstar: Never Stop Stopping, a satirical comedy starring Andy Stamberg as a white middle-class rapper who hits the big time. It's a thin premise, but the film is, somewhat surprisingly, getting decent reviews. An opening in excess of $10 million is likely, and unexpected breakout success isn't out of the question.
