New Movies June 17: Dory and the Rock

After several weekends in which multiple big new releases slugged it out for dominance at the box office, this weekend is going to belong to just one movie. There will actually be two new wide releases this week, but only Finding Dory will be a real contender for the top spot.

Pixar's sequel to Finding Nemo is definitely the big news for the week. It's getting great reviews from critics, and it's the subject of abundant buzz on social media. Family audiences are also likely hungry for a new kid-friendly film, since they don't seem to have been all that fond of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Expect Finding Dory to earn more than $100 million in its opening weekend.

The week's other new release is Central Intelligence, a buddy comedy starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. Reviews for this one aren't in yet, but there's little to suggest that it's much different than any other buddy-action comedy. Johnson and Hart can both draw audiences, though, so it's possible the film could turn in a strong second-place performance.

That doesn't leave much room for last week's hold-overs The Conjuring 2, Warcraft and Now You See Me 2. The Ninja Turtles, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Me Before You are all still in theaters, too, so moviegoers have lots of relatively fresh films to choose from, making this one of the most potentially tumultuous weekends of the summer so far.
