New Movies June 13-15: 'Jump Street' and Dragon Training Sequelfest

We won’t see the debut of a big action movie until “Transformers: Age of Exticntion” hits theaters in two weeks, and this week’s two new releases are taking advantage of the blockbuster hiatus to tap into two genres that haven’t seen much action over the past few weeks: buddy comedies and family-oriented animation.

The first of the week’s two new wide releases is “22 Jump Street,” the sequel to the 2012 hit starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, “21 Jump Street.” This new installment in the buddy-cop franchise is getting largely positive reviews, and it opened with impressive ticket sales on Thursday night, so it’s probably going to be the weekend’s winner.

It’ll face substantial competition from another sequel, though. “How to Train Your Dragon 2” is a follow-up to 2010’s hit original about a boy and his scaly, flying friend. This one is also gathering positive reviews, and it’s likely to draw lots of families with young children, who haven’t had much to get excited about since “Rio 2” opened back in April.

Chasing these two sequels will be last week’s hold-overs, “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Edge of Tomorrow,” both of which will no doubt see a big drop-off this week, and “Maleficent,” which is trying to crack $150 million in its third week.
