New Movies June 10: Warcraft, Conjuring and Magic
by EG
Three new wide releases come to theaters this weekend, two of them sequels and the third a long-awaited fantasy epic. None of the three new films is expected to have a huge opening weekend, but all three of them are likely to do well enough to best last week's number one movie.
The week's first new film, and the one most likely to take the top spot, is The Conjuring 2, a sequel to 2013's suprise hit horror film. This one tracks the further adventures of demon hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren, and it's getting mostly positive reviews ahead of its release. Predictions have it earning around $40 million for the weekend, and that would put it well ahead of last week's number one, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which took in an underwhelming $35 million last weekend.
The second new movie this week, Now You See Me 2, is also a sequel to a hit from 2013. In this new film, a group of stage magicians is off on another thrill-filled caper. The sequel is getting mediocre reviews, but it's still expected to open relatively strong, taking in about $25 million.
The big question mark for the week is Warcraft, a CGI-heavy fantasy based on a video game. It has been performing very well in international markets over the past two weeks, but buzz surrounding it in the U.S. has been weak. It's getting predominantly negative reviews and can probably expect an opening take of about $25 million, putting it in third or fourth place.
