New Movies July 15: 'Ghostbusters' Are on the Scene
by EG
The negative buzz surrounding the Ghostbusters remake - fair or not - has been one of the big movie stories of the summer, and this week we'll finally get to see how it all plays out at the box office. The new Ghostbusters is the only new wide release this week, but it faces formidable competition from some very strong hold-overs.
Ghostbusters is getting mixed reviews from major critics - in contrast to the terrible reviews it's been getting from internet trolls who have only seen the trailers - and most mainstream reviews are calling it a moderately funny, if not outstanding, take on the original. Most predictions for its box-office performance have it earning in the range of $45 to $50 million for the weekend.
The problem is that last week's number-one movie, The Secret Life Of Pets, is likely to earn more than $50 million in its second week of release, making it probable that Ghostbusters won't be able to take the top spot even if it gets a favorable reception.
Ghostbusters won't get much breathing space after the weekend, either. Next week, two big new releases - Star Trek Beyond and Ice Age: Collision Course - will enter theaters and make it difficult for Ghostbusters to maintain momentum.
