New Movies February 5: Jane Austen Zombies and The Choice

So far, 2016 has been a tumultuous year at the box office. With weeks of dominance by Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and a blizzard that kept half the country away from theaters, it's been difficult for any new film to get a firm foothold at the box office. Already by the beginning of February, we've seen three films - Ride Along 2, The Revenant and Kung Fu Panda 3 - hold the top spot since The Force Awakens gave it up, and this week's three new wide releases could shake things up even more.

The first new wide release is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a genre mashup of a Jane Austen novel and a zombie horror story. The gimmicky concept was a hit novel in 2009, but the joke - and zombies in general - could be old news by now, and whether audiences will flock to the film adaptation is questionable.

The second new wide release is The Choice, an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel about star-crossed young lovers. Sparks' stories can sometime resonate with audiences, and 2014's The Fault in Our Stars proved that heart-wrenching love stories can still be hits.

The week's final new release is Hail Caesar, a comedy from Joel and Ethan Coen about 1950s Hollywood. The Coen brothers' offbeat style doesn't often click with wide audiences, and it's doubtful that this one will appeal to anyone other than Hollywood insiders and the arthouse crowd.
