New Movies February 24: Horror, Action and a Chinese Dog
by EG
If you thought last week's new movies flew under the radar of most moviegoers, wait until this coming weekend. Of the three new wide releases this week, only one is expected to get much attention from a wide audience.
Of the week's new movies, the most likely to succeed is Get Out, a horror movie from director Jordan Peele (of Key & Peele). The film is getting broadly positive reviews, but it's also got a pretty low profile going into the weekend. An opening-weekend take of $20 million or more isn't out of the question, and the movie has a good shot at taking the number-one spot away from The Lego Batman Movie.
The week's second new wide release, the action flick Collide, isn't like to do as well. It stars Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), but it's attracting very little attention ahead of its release.
The week's third new release is also not likely to win over audiences. The animated Rock Dog, like last week's The Great Wall, is made with intention of appealing to both American and Chinese audiences. In this case, Chinese audiences weren't impressed, and American moviegoers probably won't be, either. Don't expect this one to make it into the top five.
