New Movies February 10: Batman, Fifty Shades and John Wick
by EG
Last week's new movies failed to have much of an impact on the box office, but this weekend has no Super Bowl to compete with. That means this weekend's new movies, three sequels to recent hits, have a much better shot at drawing big crowds, and at least two of them probably will.
The first of the week's new wide releases, and the film most likely to win the box-office competition in the United States, is The Lego Batman Movie. This one focuses on an animated character introduced in 2014's hit The Lego Movie, and it's expected to have a similarly successful roll out to its predecessor. It should take in about $60 million.
The second new wide release is aimed at adults, and specifically female adults, so it probably won't come close to matching the family crowds headed for the Lego film. Fifty Shades Darker is a sequel to 2015's Fifty Shades of Grey, but it isn't expected to open nearly as big as its predecessor did. Expect it to take in about $35 million and land in second place.
The week's third new wide release is John Wick: Chapter 2, a sequel to the 2014 original. Most predictions have this one earning about $20 million and taking third place.
