New Movies December 9: 'Office Christmas Party' and 'Miss Sloane'

There will be one more sleepy week at the box office in December before the holiday hubbub really gets underway. This week sees one new wide release and the expansion of one film that's so far been in limited release. Other than that, it's all hold-overs for the weekend.

The single new wide release this week is Office Christmas Party, a raunchy holiday-themed comedy starring Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, and Kate McKinnon. This one is getting poor reviews, but given that there hasn't been any purely adult-oriented fare in theaters for quite some time, it could find an audience. Expect it to take in about $20 million for the weekend, which could be enough to unseat Moana, the reigning two-time box-office champion.

Going into wide release this week is Miss Sloane, a political thriller starring Jessica Chastain. The film is getting mixed reviews, and there's not much chance that a movie about Washington lobbyists is going to get many moviegoers excited. Expect this one to bring in $2 to $5 million.

Once again, hold-over films are going to be almost the only game in town. Moana will certainly take the second spot, if not the number-one slot for a third week in a row. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will come next, followed by Arrival, Allied, and Doctor Strange, as those three films wring their final ticket dollars from audiences.
