New Movies December 4: Krampus Sneaks Down the Chimney

With last week's new movies, The Good Dinosaur and Creed, having successful opening weekends and the previous week's winner, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, holding strong, there's not a lot of room this week for new entrants at the box office. That's fine, though, because there's only one new movie going into wide release.

The lone new big movie this week is a Christmas-themed horror film called Krampus. It was co-written and directed by Michael Dougherty, whose resume includes the cult horror favorite Trick 'r Treat, so this one has a good chance of winning over viewers. It also stars Adam Scott and Toni Collette, and it tosses in a good bit of comedy with its horror, which usually helps a horror film strike a chord with a wide audience.

Krampus is facing tough competition in theaters already crowded with hits, and it will likely have a difficult time getting attention from distracted moviegoers. Still, its status as the only new blood in town could make it the go-to choice for young audiences who've already seen everything else.

This weekend is the first of two quiet ones before the Friday everyone's been waiting for, December 18, when Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens opens.
