New Movies December 28: The Quietest Weekend

Last week, Hollywood was clamoring all over itself to put movies into theaters for the Christmas holiday. Three new wide releases opened last Wednesday, and another one opened on Friday. Things couldn't be more different this week, as no new wide releases at all are in theaters, leaving moviegoers to choose between hold-overs.

That means Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will finish out the year with a third straight weekend at number one. As of December 28, the movie has taken in about $341 million domestically and sits in seventh place among all movies released in 2016. The Christmas holiday pushed Rogue One ahead of Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and with a strong final weekend of the year, it could move ahead of Deadpool, The Jungle Book and The Secret Life Of Pets to take third place.

Behind Rogue One, this week's top five will likely look much like last week's. One potential difference is a surge for La La Land, which is doing good business since its expansion last weekend and could overtake Passengers, Why Him? or Assassin's Creed, all of which had weak openings last week.

The 2017 movie year gets underway next week with the wide release of Underworld: Blood Wars and A Monster Calls, starring Rogue One's Felicity Jones.< /p>
