New Movies December 2: 'Incarnate' Takes on the Blockbusters

The first of two very quiet weeks at the box office, at least in terms of new movies, begins this week. Only one new wide release hits theaters this weekend, leaving room for hold-overs to slug it out and for moviegoers to catch their breath before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens on December 16.

The single new release this week is Incarnate, a modest horror movie about demon possession starring Aaron Eckhart. The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas aren't exactly prime time for horror movies, especially one that's flying as far under the radar as Incarnate is. Expect it to earn less than $5 million for the weekend.

That should leave the top five movies for this weekend looking a lot like last week's top five. Expect the animated Moana to stay on top, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will almost certainly remain at number two. After that, Doctor Strange, Allied, Arrival and, maybe, Trolls, will scramble for the next few spots.

Next week will also see only one new release, but that one, the holiday-themed Office Christmas Party, will be more seasonly appropriate. In fact, if Moana cools off enough in the meantime, Office Christmas Party might even enjoy a week at number one before Rogue One comes to town.
