New Movies April 15: A Barbershop, a Criminal and the Jungle
by EG
Last weekend saw a changing of the guard at the top of the box-office charts, as Batman v Superman gave up the number one slot to Melissa McCarthy's The Boss. Next weekend will most likely see a different movie at the top, and chances are that it won't be The Boss or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The movie most likely to be next weekend's top-grosser is Disney's The Jungle Book, a live action/CGI remake of the studio's 1967 animated classic. The movie is getting good pre-release buzz and overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. Predictions have it earning $60-70 million in its opening weekend, which will allow it to easily take the week's top spot.
The week's second big new release is Barbershop: The Next Cut, a sequel to the 2002 comedy starring Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer. This one is also getting generally positive reviews, and although it won't be a contender for first place, it's likely to pull in somewhere near $20 million and could fall comfortably into second place.
The week's final new wide release is Criminal, a spy thriller starring Kevin Costner. Critics don't like this one at all, and Costner has not been much of a box-office draw of late, so don't expect Criminal to earn more than $10 million or so.
The big question is how well last week's top two movies will do this week. Unless it holds over extremely well, The Boss could end up in third place, and given Batman v Superman's trajectory since its debut, it's going to have to work hard to remain in the top five this week.
