New Movies Apr. 4-6: 'Captain America' Takes on the World

There's a new Avenger in town this weekend. Well, actually, he's the oldest Avenger, but he's back in a new movie. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" debuts this week, and with no competition from big new movies, the film's box-office dominance could position Cap as the hottest superhero since Iron Man.

"Winter Soldier" is tied even more closely to "The Avengers" than recent Marvel movies like "Thor: The Dark World" were, so it's likely to ride high on the lingering love for that film. In addition to Captain America, the film features Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, as well as the Falcon, a new addition to the stable of Marvel movie heroes.

The opening of "Winter Soldier" looks to be the biggest in awhile; it took in more than $10 million on Thursday night alone, which is a bigger opening night than the last "Thor" movie or last summer's "Man of Steel" enjoyed. "Winter Soldier" is also getting good reviews, so no one would be surprised to see a weekend gross of close to $100 million.

No new wide releases are challenging "Captain America" this weekend, leaving only hold-overs "Noah" and "Divergent" to do battle with the superheroes. Both movies opened fairly strongly on their respective opening weekends, but neither was a huge hit, so neither should be a significant threat to "Winter Solider."
