New Movies Apr. 25-27: Can Paul Walker or Kate Upton Dethrone 'Captain America'?
by EGThis weekend represents a brief lull between the superhero movies of the past and the superhero movies yet to come. For those of you who've already seen "Captain America" and need something to do while you wait for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," this week offers a new action movie, a wacky comedy and a supernatural horror flick.
The action movie is "Brick Mansions," a relatively low-profile posthumous Paul Walker project created by French action-movie director Luc Besson. It's set in near-future Detroit, where criminals control a walled-in part of the city. It features non-stop Parkour-style action and excitement.
The comedy is "The Other Woman," starring Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz and Kate Upton as three women banding together to get revenge on the man who done them all wrong.
The horror movie is "The Quiet Ones," a creepy thriller about a psychically gifted/cursed woman and the psychologist who experiments on her. It's set in 1974, and it seems to be trying to latch on to the vibe of "The Conjuring."
None of the three new releases is expected to take the box-office crown this week. "The Quiet Ones" is getting generally negative reviews, and the disappointing performance of "Oculus" two weeks ago may hint that audience appetite for horror films isn't high right now. "The Other Woman" is getting even worse reviews, and there's no reason to think that audiences will be excited by Kate Upton's first foray into speaking roles. Expectations are also low for "Brick Mansions," although with the interest in Paul Walker—along with the fact that, now that "Captain America" is entering its fourth week of release, there's no other fresh action film available—this one could turn into the surprise of the week.
