New Movie Releases Oct. 25-27: 'Bad Grandpa' Takes On 'Gravity'

Over the past three weekends, there's been no real contest at the box office. More movie-goers have chosen to see "Gravity" than any other movie for three weeks running, but that could all change this weekend. For the first time in October, a new release has the potential to sell more tickets than Sandra Bullock's monster hit.

The new movie that could finally dethrone "Gravity" is, surprisingly enough "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa." The irreverent comedy stars "Jackass" frontman Johnny Knoxville reprising his role as a prank-playing elderly guy. The film's producers have been careful to explain that "Bad Grandpa" is a "spin off" of the "Jackass" films rather than a sequel, but "Jackass" fans are probably the only ones who will understand the distinction.

The film had a strong opening on Thursday night, but predictions for its weekend performance vary widely, from $16 million to $30 million, depending on who you ask. If "Bad Grandpa" performs at the upper end of that range, it could outdo "Gravity," but if it comes in at the low end, "Gravity" will probably still reign.

What's fairly certain, though, is that the weekend's other new release, the thriller "The Counselor," is not a threat to either "Gravity" or "Bad Grandpa." Predictions for this film that stars Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt, among others, have it earning just $8-$10 million over the weekend.
