'New Girl' Season 5, Episode 1: 'Big Mama P' Recap

Schmidt asks Nick to be his Best Man, but Nick drags his feet. Luckily it's all a joke, as Winston is hiding to listen to it. Of course he'll be Schmidt's Best Man.

Jess is also asked by CeCe to be Maid of Honor, an offer which is enthusiastically accepted. Schmidt is in full wedding-planning mode and Jess thinks this is their year.

Jess also has a surprise for CeCe - she has arranged to fly in Big Mama P, Cece's mother, for the engagement party. CeCe depends on her mother's approval, Jess warns Schmidt.

Schmidt consults with Nick about picking up Big Mama P from the airport, and, on the street, Winston is being recognized as a hero. He pulled a car off of a kid who was trapped underneath and is now the Carport Hero. Nick goes to pick up CeCe's mom but takes an Indian woman who doesn't speak English instead. Big Mama P has to call CeCe, who confronts Jess.

It turns out she hadn't even told her mother that she was getting married. Jess insists it will all be fine, becase it's their year, but falls down the stairs.

The fall puts her out of commission for the party. CeCe admits she's worried her mom won't approve of Schmidt but Jess is determined to help her make everything okay, laid up or no. She calls Nick and tells him to stall. Nick manages to accidentally convince the poor woman in the car with him that he's going to kill her.

Big Mama P gets to the party, and Schmidt happily introduces himself. She immediately disapproves, particularly because she wants CeCe to marry an Indian man. Jess finds out things aren't going well and borrows a scooter to get to the party. She runs into Winston and wants his help, but he's too caught up on being recognized as a hero, and not as a fun guy. To get rid of his following he is planning a prank (with a long history of terrible pranks under his belt).

Jess arrives to unveil the main event... a Bollywood performance (CeCe's mother was a Bollywood star). She seems impressed... especially when Schmidt joins the dance, and she sees how touched CeCe is about the surprise. But it's not enough. She leaves, but everyone catches her and tries to reason. She still won't give her blessing, so all of CeCe's friends do in her stead. She storms off.

Winston thinks his prank has solved it all, however. He put a feather in her shoe.
