'New Girl' Season 4, Episode 5: 'Landline' Recap
by Shannon KeirnanJess gets a call from work - they have found a new science teacher. She has terrible reception on her cell and joins the group in Nick's room, all trying to hear on their phones.
She decides the answer is a land line, and they have one installed.
Schmidt is prepping for an interview for Business Man Magazine, since his new sponge campaign is getting him a lot of attention. Nick struggles to get Schmidt and Winston to hang with him but they're both too busy, Winston studying for police academy. When the landline rings, Jess discovers that Coach is sleping with the school nurse.
She calls them into her office to declare a relationship, and finds out Coach is sleeping his way around the school.
Nick, the only one at home a lot, ends up answering the phone and taking messages. He likes how it connects him back to Schmidt and Winston's life.
Jess reprimands Coach for being the school slut but he says it's just because she hasn't gotten any in a while. The principal comes in with the new teacher, a hottie with a British accent named Ryan, and Jess is instantly smitten and flustered.
Nick conference calls Schmidt and Winston to tell them he's taking care of things for them on the phone - he broke up with the girl Winston was seeing but didn't seem that interested in, and he sent a (terrible) picture of Schmidt to the magazine for the interview. The two decide something must be done to end this.
Jess calls a meeting and discusses inappropriate relationships in the school. She tells teachers and staff to use a gesture to put a stop to things. Coach volunteers Ryan to go up and demonstrate. He gives Jess a backrub, but she gets distracted and just enjoys it. Finally she remembers to do the gesture to shut it down, but ends up basically grabbing his crotch on accident.
Schmidt and Winston get an answering machine for the loft, which offends Nick. Schmidt is wondering why the magazine hasn't called, and he steps out. The magazine then calls, wanting to do the interview right then. Winston, who is strangely amazing on the phone, steps in and pretends to be Schmidt and nails the interview, earning Schmidt a great spread in the magazine as "the bad boy of marketing."
The principal tells Jess that they should let the teachers follow their urges... and just as she's warming up to the idea of chasing after Ryan, reminds her that administration such as themselves, however, must avoid interpersonal relationships of that sort in the school.
