'New Girl' Season 4, Episode 22: 'Clean Break' Recap

Jess is determined to make Coach's departure a sentimental event, but he wants to make a clean break, and the boys are on his side.

Inspired by his no-nonsense approach to moving, Nick, Winston, and Schmidt actually decide to go through their stuff as well, and get rid of a bunch of things they don't need. They drag out boxes to go through, and Schmidt's CeCe box is discovered.

Winston sneaks off to consult with Jess, as Schmidt gets rid of his CeCe mementos, unaware she is in love with him. They try to call her again and tell her that Schmidt has broken up with Fawn, but she's out mountain climbing/finding herself and has no reception.

While going through things, Nick and Jess reveal they had a "sex mug," a mug they would put out periodically while dating to indicate that they were interested in hooking up. Winston recalls seeing the mug out just last week, and Nick admits he put it out but that nothing happened.

Jess goes to talk to him, and thanks him for covering for her, since she is the one who put the mug out. She was having wine and watching him exercise and it just seemed like a good idea. She asks if there's anything she does that makes him want to put the mug out... but he says no, it was a clean break and he doesn't work like that.

Schmidt drops his CeCe box off in the dropbox for donations, but immediately regrets it. He waits until the donations guy comes to empty the dropbox, and they get into a tussle over it.

Winston is actually hurt by Coach's lack of sentimentality, but Coach, seeing this, ends up getting a bigger suitcase so he can bring more things with him to remind him of his friends.

Nick goes back to Jess and confesses that he has thought about putting the mug out. Schmidt interrupts them to tell them how he had to buy his box back. Unable to tell Schmidt the truth directly, she tells Nick that CeCe is in love with Schmidt.

Schmidt preps to go climb the mountain and find CeCe, but when he opens the door, there she is. She tells him she loves him, and he proposes.

She says yes.

Everyone says their final goodbyes to Coach, and he leaves with May for New York.

Nick and Jess throw their sex mug away, but each sneaks out at night and looks in the trash for it... finding it missing. Winston has taken the mug and is using it as a bowl for Ferguson.
