'New Girl' Season 4, Episode 19: 'The Right Thing' Recap
by Shannon Keirnan
Schmidt's mom is in town! No one has yet met her - except Nick, who is afraid of her/wants to sleep with her.
Jess gets stood up for a brunch date... but later finds out that the reason Pete couldn't make it is that PETE DIED. Though she only went on two dates with him, he was the first person she sexted (PG style of course - it's Jess, after all), and one of the last people he was in contact with, so she thinks she should go to the funeral. She guilts CeCe and Coach into going with her.
Nick finds out that Mike at the bar is selling his 10% ownership. He thinks he and Schmidt should buy it and consider it an investment. They just need $10,000. Schmidt remembers that his mother still owes him some of his money. They meet up with her and ask for the bar mitzvah money she has been holding onto. She agrees to give it to him - once he writes his thank-you notes.
Jess, CeCe, and Coach go to the funeral, thinking they'll blend in, but find it is an intimate affair. Worse, everyone is supposed to tell their story of Pete. Jess plans to just say she went on a few dates with him... but Pete's girlfriend goes first. Jess lies and says she worked with Pete, who was a sports agent. Coach and CeCe try to flee, but NFL star J.J. Watt comes to the funeral and Coach is awestruck.
Winston is trying to get his partner Allie to hang out with him, but she refuses to do anything non-work related. So he calls her in for backup when Schmidt can't remember everyone who attended his bar mitzvah. She and Winston good cop/bad cop Schmidt into remembering the names of the people in his bar mitzvah video.
At the funeral someone mentions giving the girlfriend Pete's phone, and Jess remembers her "sext" picture on it. They try to track down the phone, Jess calling it, only to find it ringing inside, where the girlfriend has found it. And Jess' "sext" is her caller ID photo.
Schmidt's overbearing mother doesn't okay the thank-you cards, and even suggests he stop being friends with Nick. Schmidt finally stands up to her and puts her in her place. She goes to get her nails done to unwind, and runs into CeCe, who she bonds with. CeCe advises her to let go of her son a little. Schmidt's mom goes to find Schmidt, and gives him the money. He and Nick become part owners of the bar.
Allie finally explains to Winston that her last partner fell in love with her and ruined things, and she doesn't want that to happen again. He laughs at the idea, and the two grab a beer.
