'New Girl' Season 2, Episode 18: 'Tinfinity' Recap
by Shannon KeirnanIt is the ten-year anniversary of Nick and Schmidt. Obviously, Schmidt is planning a big party.
Jess points out that the chemical symbol for tin (the ten-year gift) is SN. Mind blown, and the name of the party—Tinfinity—is born.
Nick, on the other hand, doesn’t want a party.
Jess tells CeCe about the party. She also thinks it is weird that Nick is the last person she kissed… actually, Schmidt. She tells CeCe she can’t stop thinking about Nick's mouth on her mouth. CeCe tells her she needs a new guy. An Anti-Nick. A different mouth on her mouth.
Jess goes looking for a new man at the bar, but the options are slim.
Winston comes in with a “strapping young man.” Jax McTavish, he plays safety for San Francisco. Winston comes over and explains that he interviewed him, and they hit it off. Jess asks for an introduction. The boys laugh at the very idea, so she goes on her own.
Nick watches them chatting with a strange expression, but Schmidt gets his attention while planning Tinfinity. Masculine garden party? Nick wants to help plan, so Schmidt gives him port-a-potty and balloons.
CeCe’s new boyfriend Shivrang tells her that both of their mothers have given him approval. So…
“When do you want to do this thing?”
CeCe isn’t pleased with the method of proposal, but he reminds her it was an arranged marriage.
“I used to just think that if I was being proposed to, I would notice it was happening.”
At the manly garden party, Winston is not happy that Jess invited Jax. He tells her he will stop her, but she insists she will get that mouth on her mouth.
Schmidt’s party is expensive and glorious. Nick shows him his contribution… a piece of garbage port-a-potty. That he purchased.
Schmidt shows him the big nice potty trailers that he rented, and Nick is upset that Schmidt expected him to fail. He tells Schmidt to get rid of them and have guests use his potty.
Jess interrupts Winston to get to Jax, and a football game erupts. Jax and Jess flirt while Winston tries to intervene.
Jess talks to Nick, who is trying to encourage people to use his bathroom. She tells him she likes Jax because he talks about his feelings. Jess “sells” the potty by going in as a favor for him.
Jax tells Jess that he likes her… a lot. She gets excited that he shares his feelings… until he starts to cry about how much he likes her.
Schmidt tells Nick it’s almost time for the speech. He provides Nick with note cards that are actually an entire speech. Nick gets angry that they are no longer “equal” like they used to be in college.
Jess finds Winston and asks if Jax is supposed to be that intense. Winston says yes, as a professional athlete he does everything hard… he doesn’t like, he loves.
Jess goes to see Jax, who is sad-eating popcorn. He apologizes for being too much, and explains he just got out of a relationship. He tells her he feels like he has known her forever… and she feels like she wants to French him.
They move to kiss, but Shivrang interrupts by speaking on the microphone. He tells CeCe he is excited to spend the rest of his life with her, and proposes, with music and lights means for Schmidt's speech. Schmidt looks on with shock and horror.
CeCe says yes. Schmidt wanders off through the crowd. Nick watches him leave.
Jax grabs the mic as well to report a missing item—his heart. He tells Jess he is in love with her. She squirms. He tells her he plans to marry her and put a baby in her, and they will have dogs and cats.
“I met my third wife!”
Nick goes after Schmidt, who pretends he is only upset about the party not going how it was supposed to. Nick takes him away from the party.
CeCe shows Jess her ring and they squeal. She is hiding from Jax, who is sobbing openly on Winston.
Nick shows Schmidt that he did get a balloon—a hot air balloon. But he didn’t realize he needed propane to get it up, so it’s just sitting. He tells Schmidt he is sorry about CeCe. They drink to their friendship in the basket.
Jess and Winston join them in the balloon party, drinking. Nick gives her the bottle, which his mouth has been on, and she doesn’t want it. She tells him she doesn’t want to think about his mouth, and runs out of the basket yelling.
