'New Girl' Season 2, Episode 13: 'A Father's Love' Recap
by Shannon KeirnanEveryone laughs at Nick while he plays “Feely-Cup,” a game which apparently Nick is terrible at, that involves… feeling stuff in a cup while blindfolded.
Schmidt comes in to tell him that his dad is there. Nick is shocked. His dad jumps in to play Feely-Cup and wins (tampon wrapped in duct tape and dipped in baking powder).
Nick gets his dad situated, and Jess dashes in the kitchen to ask Winston and Schmidt what he does. Winston says he’s a businessman with a mustache that is like “the world’s sexiest push broom,” Schmidt says he’s a con man.
Nick comes in to angry-fix the sink. He blames his dad for his anger issues and “blood pressure of a hummingbird” and proceeds to destroy the sink.
Everyone but Schmidt goes to dinner. Nick’s dad, Walt, charms Jess. Winston calls his Pop Pop. However Nick isn’t thrilled with the stories he tells.
Schmidt and CeCe are at a bar, but she’s getting texts from her mother trying to set her up with Indian men.
Later it’s just Jess and Walt at the table. Walt asks Jess if she thinks Nick is really mad at him… He just wants a second chance. Then he asks her if she’s ever been to the racetrack.
The group goes to the racetrack the next day. Walt gives Nick money to go bet, and he and Winston leave to put bets down.
Schmidt, meanwhile, is creeping on CeCe’s date. So, strangely enough, is Robby. He is still in love with CeCe too. They’re not great spies. CeCe sees them.
At the track, Walt tells Jess that as a child Nick wanted a horse. He wants to buy a horse for him and Nick to own together. He takes Jess with him to go look at a horse. She pretends to be a vet student and talks down the horse.
“I’m seeing a lot of split ends. The mane is totally the wrong cut for the shape of his face.”
Winston and Nick are walking and talking. Nick finds out Walt owes Winston over a thousand dollars. He realizes he left Walt with Jess, and he’s going to rip her off.
Robby and Schmidt go to drown their sorrows. Schmidt wants to use his powers to get CeCe to take Robby back, and then later… smite him. Well, that's harsh. “Defeat gloriously for CeCe’s hand.”
He glosses that over.
Nick and Winston find Walt and Jess, who tells him he can finally realize his childhood dream and co-own the horse “A Father’s Love” Only it’s not his childhood dream. Also she’s an investor in the horse. Walt reassures them he has someone standing by to take the horse already—horse semen in Dubai is gold. However Jess gets upset at the idea of selling “A Father’s Love.”
“There’s more to A Father’s Love than just semen!”
Walt sees someone he knows who probably owes him money, and takes off after him.
Later Nick finds out Walt took $500 from Jess, who will believe everything. Walt assures him that he’s going to sell A Father’s Love for a huge profit. Nick insists on going with him to make sure Jess gets her money back.
Robby and Schmidt show up banging on CeCe’s door. They bust inside, and find a bunch of people. She can’t go on a date with Pavun until their families meet.
Jess and Nick wait with Walt while he meets people in a parking lot at night to sell the horse. Nick wants Jess to stay out of the way and to stay safe. Nick begins to sweat horribly during the negotiations. They think he’s a cop and make him strip down to show he has no wire. He weirds out the people enough that they leave.
Jess takes the truck, forcing Nick and his dad to talk. They don’t talk, Nick just yells at Walt. He tells him he has been mad at him for 30 years. He is not a successful adult. Walt thinks he looks cold and wants to give him his pants, which A Father’s Love eats.
Walt admits he has made mistakes. He invites him to a game tomorrow.
Schmidt and Robby lick their wounds. They bond, although Schmidt has it worked out that once he has defeated all the Indians he must kill Robby outright.
Jess gets up early to see Walt leaving. She blocks the door but he escapes. He asks Jess to keep an eye on Nick.
Jess goes to angry fix the sink.
Nick comes out. “Jess, if you’re gonna mess with my sink, put some goggles on. Your eyes are twice the size of normal eyes, it’s a bigger target.”
Jess tells him his father has left. She is angry and wants to drink—she gets Nick more now. Nick, however, isn’t that upset. He is used to his father. He tells her if someone is broken, they stay broken.
“You’re not broken,” Jess tells him. “You should be so much worse. Seriously, you could be picking up calls on a banana.”
Schmidt and Robby continue to plot how to get CeCe back.
