'New Girl' Zooey Deschanel Divorcing Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard

'New Girl' Zooey Deschanel Divorcing Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard Sweet lord, the great songs that will come out of this story from both directions...

"New Girl" star Zooey Deschanel, who inspired millions of red-blooded men to fall over her again with the "Star Spangled Banner" performance she delivered during the World Series, is divorcing her husband, talented Death Cab for Cutie front man Ben Gibbard.

Deschanel's spokesperson confirmed the split, and a source close to the couple told Us Weekly "It was mutual and amicable. There was no third party involved."

The couple got married in September of 2009 in a ceremony in Seattle after being introduced by their manager. People reports Gibbard bought Deschanel an egregiously large 3 karat diamond ring.

Besides starring in "New Girl" and recent movies like "Your Highness" and "500 Days of Summer," Deschanel is part of the popular indie act She & Him, alongside singer/songwriter M. Ward.

Gibbard has been busy touring in support of Death Cab for Cutie's new album "Codes and Keys."

While Deschanel's single-ness is good news for mankind, the fact that she split from Gibbard is a bit of a bummer for nice, regular guys out there as well. Where Gibbard's looks have always been in general pretty average, his talent and lyrical craftsmanship are truly remarkable. While Deschanel also has immeasurable talent, her looks have somehow skyrocketed into uncharted levels of hotness as of late.

Sure, Gibbard is a rock star (and thus not all that normal), but you have to wonder if, between the distance caused by busy lives and the noticable difference in external appearance, a gap was created that couldn't be bridged with all the beautiful songs in the world. Not that it's right or fair, but it sounds like at least part of that story could be the hard truth.

If anyone can turn hard truths into something beautiful, it's Gibbard. Can't wait to hear the next Death Cab record...
