'New Girl' Recap: Season 5, Episode 17: 'Road Trip'
by Shannon KeirnanSchmidt's trip to Tokyo is canceled, because Nick screwed up the booking (it was a scam). Schmidt and CeCe are driving and discussing what to do for his bachelor party now when a jerk cuts them off, then gets out of the car and screams at Schmidt, who is intimidated and unable to do anything.
Feeling emasculated, he goes back to the loft and declares he and the boys are going to Vegas. CeCe and Jess plan to just stay in for a quiet night at home.
The boys go to rent a convertible but the only one available isn't manly enough for Schmidt. He and Nick ride "motorcycles" while the rest of the guys follow behind in Big Schmidt's minivan. Schmidt tries to light a cigar and runs himself off the road. Nick comforts him and restores his sense of masculinity.
Winston gets a text from Jess that she is with Aly and Trip and things aren't looking good for the two, and he can't stop looking at his phone. Big Schmidt takes his phone away, and makes him get drunk at a trashy roadside bar.
In the bar, which is full of "desert people," Schmidt offends everyone and starts a fight by wanting ice in his whiskey. Nick says they're going to stop in the bathroom before they fight, and tries to sneak outside. Schmidt refuses to let the "butch" thing go, determined to prove he is a man and fight. He admits that being yelled at in front of CeCe was hard for him, because he will be a bad husband if he can't protect her. He has to fight.
Nick decides to have his back, but when they go outside, the two men they were supposed to fight grow into a big crowd.
Winston, drunk by now, sees the boys outside surrounded, and he and the others race out to defend them. Everyone on Team Schmidt gets their butts handed to them.
Schmidt is even more depressed now, certain he will make a terrible husband. Nick tells him he'll be a great modern husband, because he's been a great "husband" to Nick. He takes care of him, and that's what husbands do. CeCe doesn't need him to beat someone up, but to be there and to care for her.
The rest of the boys discuss their lost loves, and Winston is finally ready to let Aly go. Big Schmidt gives him his phone back... and he finds out she and Trip broke up.
