New 'Flintstones' Movie in the Works with Will Ferrell Attached
by Andy NeuenschwanderWill Ferrell has put his name on a lot of projects in the past, like "Anchorman," "Talladega Nights" and even "Funny or Die." But he's about to add another big one: "The Flintstones."
The classic cartoon will be rebooted as a new movie under Warner Bros., and Ferrell is attached to the project. If you're wondering, the answer is no, he won't be playing Fred. Rather, Ferrell and his producing partner Adam McKay will be producing the film, and handing off writing duties to Chris Henchy, who co-wrote "The Campaign."
Unlike the last run of "Flintstones" movies, which were live-action and starred John Goodman, Rick Moranis and Rose O'Donnell, this reboot will remain an animated feature.
The property was last in the hands of "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, who was hoping to turn the old cartoon into a new animated series, most likely to accompany his other animated shows on Fox. However, the pilot episode's script didn't perform as well as expected in early reviews, and the project was permanently tabled.
Currently, the project is in the development stage, and may end up being tabled as well depending on the outcome of the script and focus groups. Considering that the original series came out in the early 1960's, updating it for a modern audience might prove difficult.
