Netflix to Reboot 'One Day at a Time'

Back in the 1970s, producer Norman Lear ruled the TV airwaves with the sitcoms he created, many of them spun off from his biggest hit, All in the Family. It's one of Lear's lesser known, stand-alone series that's getting a reboot treatment, though. Netflix has ordered a 13-episode reboot of One Day at a Time, Lear's sitcom about a single mother raising her children on her own.
The original One Day at a Time, which ran on CBS from 1975 to 1984, came at a time when the idea of a mother choosing to live on her own with her children was still novel. Bonnie Franklin played a divorced mother of two teenage girls, played by Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips, who moved from small-town Indiana to Indianapolis after her divorce. In addition to the central trio, the series also featured Pat Harrington, Jr., as their apartment building's superintendent.
The new version will be a reboot rather than a remake, with a Latino cast and a new setting. Justina Machado will play the series' single mother, and Rita Moreno will play Machado's mother. Todd Grinnell (Desperate Housewives) will play an apartment manager, but his character will differ markedly from the one Harrington played in the original series.
