Neil Patrick Harris Seems to Agree With Bad Reviews of His Oscar Hosting Performance
by Andy Neuenschwander
Former "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris has made a bit of a name for himself as an awards show host. He's done the Tony Awards multiple times to rave reviews.
This year, Harris took on the Oscars. Things didn't go quite as well as they usually do for him as a host. Harris was panned for what many critics, both professional and couch, saw as "lame" jokes.
Sure enough, Harris did use quite a few puns and tried to sell them as slightly ironic, but it didn't quite translate. Other jokes—such as one that had "Selma" actor David Oyelowo read a punchline about the remake of "Annie" or another that involved a box containing Harris' "Oscar predictions"—just fell flat.
What does NPH think about all of this? Well, according to his Twitter, he might agree.
"My iphone shattered the morning of the Oscars," Harris tweeted today. "I probably should have read more into that." He added the hashtag "#harbinger" to round out his message.
It seems clear that Harris has a feeling of doom and gloom about how the show went. However, it might be that Harris tweeted that in response to the criticism, and that he still feels proud of the job he and the rest of the creative team did.
In any case, blame for last night's show can't rest squarely on the shoulders of Neil Patrick Harris. The Oscars have proved to be a rather dull, overinflated affair for years, and attempts to revive it with the likes of Seth MacFarlane (not to mention James Franco and Anne Hathaway) didn't work.
It's looking like NPH might not be asked back to host again next year. But at this point, would he really want to?
