Neil Patrick Harris Will Host the Oscars, Shows Off Bucket List in Announcement Video

Neil Patrick Harris Will Host the Oscars, Shows Off Bucket List in Announcement Video This year's Oscars are going to be LEGEN...wait for it...

"How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris is set to host the upcoming Academy Awards telecast in early 2015, continuing the triple-threat actor's run of hosting gigs.

After rumors quickly began to spread, Harris settled any doubts and made the announcement himself via a video that he posted on his Twitter page.

The video is predictably funny and adorable, in true NPH fashion: it starts with him saying "I'm in" into his phone, then looking through his "bucket list" and circling "Host the Oscars" at the bottom.

Side note: Neil Patrick Harris has one of the best bucket lists we've ever seen, and when you put it all together he has a pretty amazing resume. Performing with Muppets? Check. Meeting the president? Check. Rapping with Snoop Dogg? Check. Then there's the ever-adorable references to his husband and two children, just to tug at your heartstrings a little.

Other side note: Harris is on his way to being the first to EGOT in hosting. He has already hosted both the Emmys and the Tony Awards, so all that will be left after the Oscars will be the Grammys.

Last year saw Ellen DeGeneres hosting the night, which became the most-watched Oscars telecast in history with 43 million viewers. It was also the night that saw the most-retweeted selfie in history, with Ellen posting a photo on Twitter featuring a number of celebrities at the ceremony.

It's not entirely clear why Ellen won't be returning to host considering that success, but it's likely the decision was Ellen's and not the Academy's or the network's.

In any case, NPH can bring the singing and dancing and should make for an excellent host. Check out his announcement video below.
