Neil Patrick Harris Destroys Our Hopes For a 'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9

Neil Patrick Harris Destroys Our Hopes For a 'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9 Neil Patrick Harris, I love you, I truly do. But today you have broken my heart.

The “How I Met Your Mother” star has essentially shot down any lingering hopes of a ninth season, meaning that this upcoming season will be the show’s last.

“Our contracts end at 8, so it’s one of those, you know, if they wanna do 9, they’re welcome to, but we have a lot of other things [going on],” NPH says.

“Cobie has got ‘The Avengers’ that just made a billion dollar, Jason makes a ton of movies, I’m anxious to move East and Josh is directing and acting in movies as well. So, we all are anxious to move forward.”

Oh noes! Why ya gotta make it sound so final, Barney?

But wait! Is there still hope? Have my candle-light vigils at my HIMYM shrine paid off? Harris adds:

“I think the only way I think a season 9 or any longer would happen would be [if it were] financially right — that’s the reality of it. We love the show, we love doing it – eight years is a long time and we’re as happy a family as we’ve ever been.”

Well. At least he’s honest. Those vacays with Elton John ain’t cheap.

There has been a lot of back-and-forth lately about whether the show will continue, and, if not, speculation is running wild about who will finally make her appearance as Mrs. Ted Mosby. If this truly is the end of HIMYM (whyyyy?), then the show has a lot of wrapping up to do.

Producers will get one season to reunite Barney and Robin and marry the two off, while simultaneously introducing Ted's One Big Love interest, having them court, making the audience like her, and then throwing another (potential) wedding into the mix.

So if nothing else, this season, while the last and therefore saddest—unless you count the season where Marshall’s father died, that still gets me—will promise a whole lot of surprises and dramatics. And comedy, of course. Because it's a great show and I for one will be sad to see it end.

“How I Met Your Mother” premieres its last season this upcoming Monday.
